The Council of Europe adopted the Meaningful Engagement of People with Lived Experience framework developed by Chris Ash and Sophie Otiende for NSN and GFEMS. 

In preparation for developing an evidence-informed training for survivors hoping to share their stories publicly, the NSN conducted a survey of 85 survivors under IRB approval from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. While full analysis is forthcoming, we are sharing our initial results with the field so that anyone hoping to improve their survivor storytelling practices can draw upon the collective wisdom and experiences of our respondents.

This guidance document is for funders and organizations that aim to improve their inclusion of people with lived experiences of modern slavery in their research, and monitoring, evaluation, accountability, and learning work.

The NSN was honored to partner with Freedom Network USA and the US Department of Housing and Urban Development on an assessment of trafficking survivors’ housing needs. Findings were that “safe and affordable housing helps prevent people at risk of trafficking from experiencing the kind of instability that can increase the risk of victimization, fosters stability that can prevent survivors from being re-victimized, and, ultimately, supports survivors on their complex journeys to healing.”

On February 1, the NSN submitted input to the US State Department to inform next year’s Trafficking in Persons Report.

Survivor leaders have always been at the forefront of sex worker safety work, and yet the anti-trafficking sector has rarely considered their needs and recommendations. This guidebook by Freedom Network USA and the National Survivor Network recenters their wisdom while offering practical guidance for how to do anti-trafficking work without harming sex workers in five main categories: services, outreach and identification, partnerships, funding and resources, and public policy.

The Debt Bondage Repair Act (DBRA) is designed to empower survivors of human trafficking to repair their credit. This act acknowledges the immense challenges faced by survivors and provides a pathway o remove adverse credit information resulting from their trafficking victimization. This guide provides tips for survivors, service providers, government entities, and law enforcement in how to navigate the DBRA process.

In our final session, Helen covers the ways that individuals with disabilities experience unique vulnerabilities to trafficking.

This presentation provides an accessible clinical overview of dissociative experiences held by survivors of all forms of trafficking. The presentation will offer a series of recommendations, including a supplemental list of further reading and viewing materials, to direct service providers. The presentation will conclude with a call to action for clinical professionals to employ liberatory and evidence-based practices to a chronically underserved population.

This participatory action research study by the Young Women’s Empowerment Project, a social justice organizing project led by and for young people of color who have current or former experience in the sex trade and street economies, addresses the violence that girls in sex trade and street economies face, as well as their resilience and resistance methods.

Often, people misrepresent safety for sex workers as “leaving people in bad situations” or assume that it does not address “on-roads” and “off-ramps.” This is typically a misdirection strategy used by partial criminalization advocates to create a straw man argument to rally opposition to sex worker safety initiatives.

This study aimed to update the evidence base on survivors’ access to psychological assistance in England and Wales and sought to: (1) establish if survivors are receiving their entitled assistance; (2) document in what format and settings the assistance is received; and (3) understand barriers to access and the impact of psychological assistance on survivors’ mental wellbeing.

Community accountability can be creating communal support for those impacted, and/or collectively interrupting, challenging, stopping, and shifting abusive behavior and the underlying systems that support it. The key is working collectively in community rather than relying on external authorities and systems of oppression. It is not a formulaic set of responses, but grows organically in relation to the specific people and relationships involved.

Explore the tools and resources that support the use of human-centered, non-punitive accountability practices in movement spaces.

Being able to recognize when we have caused harm and work to make repair is essential to community accountability. We often focus our curiosity about accountability on how others can take accountability for harm they caused us, while failing to be thoughtful about the ways we have caused harm. In 2022, the NSN hosted Mia Mingus for a powerful workshop based on this blog post, which is essential learning for all of us in this sector.

Sometimes when we are overwhelmed or triggered, we can forget details and dates. What felt like it happened once or twice might have happened six times, or what felt like it happened over a dozen times may have happened twice. In general, it is a good idea to document incidences that are part of a pattern both to help with remembering what happened and when, as well as with preserving any evidence. This form provides a simple way to document challenges in case it arises to the level of a grievance.

To eliminate health disparities, we need to make progress in states and regions where conservative opinions are the norm. Some ways of talking about health equity topics can backfire in conservative contexts – while others can unlock the door to support for good policy. In this session, the FrameWorks Institute will share pragmatic strategies for navigating toward justice in red-state terrain. Each recommendation is grounded in evidence from empirical research showing that reframing can help to build common ground on even the most divisive public health topics.

Drawing on FrameWorks’ research on critical health equity topics like tobacco health burdens, maternal and infant health, and oral health access, we teamed up with a county health director to share about communication strategies that elevate health equity issues and mobilize the public and political will for change.
