Survivors’ Experiences of Sharing Their Trafficking Stories Publicly: Preliminary Findings

In preparation for developing an evidence-informed training for survivors hoping to share their stories publicly, the NSN conducted a survey of 85 survivors under IRB approval from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. While full analysis is forthcoming, we are sharing our initial results with the field so that anyone hoping to improve their survivor storytelling practices can draw upon the collective wisdom and experiences of our respondents.

Housing Needs of Human Trafficking Survivors Study

The NSN was honored to partner with Freedom Network USA and the US Department of Housing and Urban Development on an assessment of trafficking survivors’ housing needs. Findings were that “safe and affordable housing helps prevent people at risk of trafficking from experiencing the kind of instability that can increase the risk of victimization, fosters stability that can prevent survivors from being re-victimized, and, ultimately, supports survivors on their complex journeys to healing.”

Why Decriminalizing Sex Work is more than just Decriminalizing Sex Work: a manifesto by Emi Koyama

Often, people misrepresent safety for sex workers as “leaving people in bad situations” or assume that it does not address “on-roads” and “off-ramps.” This is typically a misdirection strategy used by partial criminalization advocates to create a straw man argument to rally opposition to sex worker safety initiatives.

In this blog post, Emi Koyama reminds us that “The oft-repeated statement “sex work is work” does not imply that everything is fine with sex work as is. It means that sex work is a site of survival, of struggles and accomplishments, of exploitation and resistance, of degradation and dignity, like any other work.”

Hidden Brain: Mind Reading 2.0: The Double Standard

It is much easier to see bias in other people than to understand and mitigate our own biases. While the dynamics discussed in this podcast are universal, they may be amplified in trauma survivors.

“It’s easy to spot bias in other people, especially those with whom we disagree. But it’s not so easy to recognize our own biases. In the latest in our “Mind Reading 2.0” series, we revisit a favorite conversation with psychologist Emily Pronin. We’ll look at one of the most bewildering aspects of how we read minds — in this case, our own.”

Hidden Brain: Mind Reading 2.0: Why did you do that?

When we believe we know why someone else made the choices they did, we often get it wrong. While the dynamics discussed in this podcast are universal, they are often amplified for trauma survivors.

Psychologist Liane Young says this ability to assess other people’s thoughts is an extraordinary feat of cognition. But this mental superpower can sometimes lead us astray. Transform Harm: 10 Strategies For Cultivating Community Accountability

Community accountability can be creating communal support for those impacted, and/or collectively interrupting, challenging, stopping, and shifting abusive behavior and the underlying systems that support it. The key is working collectively in community rather than relying on external authorities and systems of oppression. It is not a formulaic set of responses, but grows organically in relation to the specific people and relationships involved.

Being able to recognize when we have caused harm and work to make repair is essential to community accountability. Incident Documentation Form

Sometimes when we are overwhelmed or triggered, we can forget details and dates. What felt like it happened once or twice might have happened six times, or what felt like it happened over a dozen times may have happened twice. In general, it is a good idea to document incidences that are part of a pattern both to help with remembering what happened and when, as well as with preserving any evidence. This form provides a simple way to document challenges in case it arises to the level of a grievance.
